The Craft of Paying Attention
The first essay. On why this blog exists, and what it hopes to practice.
This is where it begins. Not with a manifesto, but with a practice — the oldest one there is, and the one we are least taught: learning to pay attention, on purpose, to things that deserve it.
Everything that follows on this site is downstream of that single conviction: that the quality of a life is, to a surprising degree, the quality of its attention. What you attend to, you strengthen. What you ignore, you slowly lose. And in an age engineered to fragment attention into ever-smaller pieces, the deliberate practice of sustained, generous notice becomes something close to an act of self-preservation.
Attention is the rarest and purest form of generosity.
So that is what this is: a place to practice paying attention, in long form, slowly, in conversation with a machine but in the service of something entirely human. Welcome. Take your time. There is no hurry here.
